Day trip out of Siena - Need help with best route

Heading to Italy in less than 2 weeks (yay!!!) and trying to finalize some road trips...

So we want to do a day trip out of SIena - - while I'm sure all of landscape is beautiful I would prefer not to drive the entire time on a highway (part of time is OK since we only have a day). I need some help on the roads:

google maps takes us to Montepulciano via SS73 and SS715.

-then- go to Pienza via SP146 and on to San Quirico d'Orcia

-then- up SR2 back to Siena

Based on your knowledge of the roads, are there better options?

It’s all good but I would take the SS73 to SP438 to Aciano, then the SP 60 to San Giovanni d’ Asso, traveling on to Montisi via SP 14.

Then heading toward Pienza via SP 71. Even if you go Montepulciano first and need to back track a little, it is actually a good thing as you will see two different views coming and going.

Heading back the SR 2 is good direct way to head home. Make sure you know which Porta you need to get back to your hotel, as it is a bit of a rabbit warren roadway when you reach Siena.

The most important question is: Where are you stopping for lunch?
