Wandering through a Palermo market in the afternoon?

We will be arriving in Palermo after returning our rental car at the airport on a Sunday afternoon, and then Monday morning have a tour guide lined up for Monreale, with lunch either after the tour near Monreale or back in Palermo. That will leave mid-afternoon and evening in Palermo before our flight leaves early Tuesday morning (I know, I know, not enough time to do Palermo justice .... but we couldn't do everything without running ourselves ragged!). Had hoped to wander through Ballaro or other market, but thinking the timing will not be optimal from what I have read? Should we instead just plan on taking Sunday evening to enjoy a classic passiegetta, and then hit some of the historic highlights while walking on Monday afternoon/evening with a leisurely last dinner in Sicily? (For context, we have planned 1 night Taormina, 3 nights Ragusa, 1 night Agrigento, and then the 2 nights in Palermo).

Experts will hopefully chime in but I believe markets are better visited in the morning hours when everything is happening....just strolling around the historic district/Quattro Canti will take up your afternoon...enjoy...breath...have a nice Sicilian dinner and glass of wine....:)

Weekday mornings are optimal for the markets, and not Sundays, and not afternoons.

Reschedule the tour for Monday afternoon, and see the markets on Monday morning.

And consult schedules for any attractions you might visit on the Sunday.

Hi MNnortherner, as Chester9cat says no, it wouldn't make sense for you to go to a market at that time. The best you can do is go around a bit, walk along the pedestrian half of via Maqueda to Quattro Canti/piazza Pretoria/piazza Bellini, perhaps get to the Cattedrale for a look from outside (which is the best part anyway), or get to piazza Marina, and then an evening in the Teatro Massimo area.

If you have some time in the morning before Monreale you could perhaps visit Chiesa del Gesù (closed in the afternoon) with a quick stop by Ballarò, or Palazzo Reale with Cappella Palatina. Then in the afternoon you could at least see Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio and Chiesa di Santa Caterina (both in piazza Bellini), and perhaps Oratorio di Santa Cita. Better than nothing.

We exactly overlapped Vagabonda :D

Absolutely, if the tour to Monreale could be rescheduled for the afternoon it would be much more convenient for Palermo.

Yes, we did Marco!

The tour to Monreale might also be rescheduled for the Sunday afternoon.

I was recently in Monreale on Sunday for the Duomo, and it worked out well, even driving from Palermo to Monreale with far less traffic, and a much faster drive than anything you would encounter during the week.

And of course this is a perfect application for Marco's great map for planning your touring with attractions, locations, and schedules.

Agree, however the problem with Sunday in Monreale is that the clositer would be closed as far as I know

In any case, with only a day and a half something has to be skipped.

Hi Marco,

Yes, the cloister was closed.

And yes, the time is limited for Palermo, and something has to be skipped.

With an arrival in Palermo on a Sunday afternoon, the time would be good for the Duomo in Monreale, and then a return to Palermo for dinner.

Then at least there's a full day on the Monday for Palermo itself.

Absolutely agree V, Monreale on Sunday would be the best choice all considered.

In any case, @MNnortherner: if you do go to Monreale on Monday morning, don't consider"with lunch either after the tour near Monreale or back in Palermo", but only with lunch back in Palermo. This way at least you'll have the full afternoon and can start right away visiting (for example with Palazzo dei Normanni, conveniently at the entrance of the historic center if coming from Monreale...for lunch nearby Villa San Giovanni degli Eremiti may be a good choice, based on the reviews here and on what a few people in Palermo told me).
