Overnight stop between Lecce and Rome

We are looking forward to our trip to Puglia in July this year and have booked all accommodation except one night. we will be driving from Lecce to Rome and would like a one night stop somewhere in between. On Google maps the two main routes are either through the middle (through Benevento) or along the coast towards Pescara. Probably don't want to do alot of sightseeing as we won't have much time but would perhaps like an interesting small to large town that is nice to wander around and to have dinner out (somewhere between Bari and Rome). Thanks.

Ruby, you may think that this will give you too much driving to do afterwards, but I would recommend stopping overnight at Trani.

Trani seems like the best option as it covers both routes. Here are some more ideas:

Middle route: Matera or Acerenza.

Coastline route: Vieste or Termoli.

CsillaV has made some good suggestions. After visiting friends in Trani last September we drove up to Vieste where we stayed for 4 nights. We also visited nearby Termoli. We enjoyed both towns immensely. If you like seafood then you should visit one of the Trabocchi restaurants dotted along this stretch of the coast.
