Coach to Villach

We need help with tickets to Salzburg please. We have booked coach tickets from Venezia S. Lucia to Villach Hauptbahnhof on 26th September, through OBB. From there we plan to get the train to Salzburg.

However, the tickets and confirmation are both printed in German, so we have no idea what we have actually bought or what to do at S. Lucia.

The tickets seem to have a 'barcode' of sorts on them. Do we get on a coach and show the driver, and which coach? Or do we go to a counter selling train tickets and ask there? Do all the coaches leave from the same area, or do we have to find a certain place for Villach? Are the coach stands numbered or named?

HELP!!! Please.

Have you got coach tickets or train tickets? Santa Lucia is the railway station in Venice. It is well within the pedestrianised areas so no coach will be picking up there. To board a coach you will need to cross the Grand Canal on the new Canova bridge to Piazzale Roma where all coaches depart.

Why are you travelling part way by coach? Train from Santa Lucia would be easier. See http://www.trenitalia.it for timetables.

Oh no!

The tickets say From Venezia S. Lucia and we thought we were booking a coach.

The reason we didn't book a train was that one that left at a good time only arrived in Salzburg at nearly 10pm and we thought that was too late to have to find our hotel and check in.

It seemed strange to me too, but I went on line (on the German Rail website) and found out that indeed there seems to be an 'intercity bus' leaving Venice at 11.20, connecting in Salzburg with a train to Salzburg. Weird. If OP plans to use that, it would be wise to pre-arrange the train ticket from Villach onwards (the Venice train station can arrange that) as the layover would bee too limited to take care of that effectively.

.....You will not have a train to Villach but a coach leaving from the bus terminal Piazzale Roma and not from Santa Lucia train station . Trenitalia does not have a train to Villach (at that particular time you've booked) even if it looks like they have one...you book the whole itinerary through them but you will not catch a train but a bus.

So, from Venice, remember to go to Piazzale Roma and from there you will have the coach (they all leave from the same area "by the public toilettes") and show the driver your train ticket!

enjoy your stay in Venice

We will book our train tickets from Villach to Salzburg from home. There are 6 of us, and so don't want to find that at the last minute there are not enough seats for us.

Yes, actually further down the page that we don't understand, there are the words

" Einstag: Piazzale Roma"

I'm so pleased that we asked for help from TA.
