can you tell me how far/long it is to Turin by car/rail from Ast and also Alba?
I would not pass trough Turin if you are arriving from Genova.
The best way would be Genova - Alessandria -Asti
To answer the exact question, From Asti to Turin will take you 30 minutes on a train (some trains are slower) and about 45 minutes to drive.
From Alba driving time is about 1 hour. Asti and Alba are about 20 minutes apart - the new superstrada (freeway, motorway, dual-carrageway) is now complete so the drive is now much improved.
Not to split fine hairs with Phil who also lives in Piedmont, but in fact most trains from Asti to PN station in Turin take around 40-45 minutes not 30. It is possible to drive to PN station in 40 minutes too (depending on traffic of course) and once I did it in 25 minutes actually to Porto Susa(when my niece needed to catch a train to Paris and the trains out of Asti were delayed by one hour) but I wouldn't reccomend it! But I usually reckon 45 minutes to Piazza Victor Veneto (good [parking and more central then PN) in non rush hour is safe.
The new SS231, boring as it is, does simplify the time from Asti-Alba, but I would allow at least 25-30 minutes, unless you are driving a la Italiano (in an Alfa or Audi) and traffic out of Alba nowadays can be slow as they seem to have a new system of roundabouts and chicanes.
