Local Wineries

We will be in Asti/Alba during the second week in September. Which small wineries would you recommend? Thanks.

The central Piedmont wine area around Asti and Alba abounds with so many wineries, most of them quite small and normally friendly for visitors, although you might be there during vendemmia or harvest, in which case some may be busy. Try the information centres in both Asti and Alba for their guidebooks and list of open wineries. Also www.astesana-stradadelvino.it. And you hotel should be able to help you.

Off the top of my head, some wineries which you can drop in on without a reservation are The Marchiesi di Barolo near Barolo, Francone on the road to Neive and Serafino in Canale. Also cantina sociales (co-op wineries) offer good deals and are always open, some that come to mind are the famous Prodottorie in Barbaresco, the Terre del Barolo on the road to Barolo and the Fresia one in Castlenouvo Don Bosco.

Another suggestion is to try the regional enoteca's which are tasting showrooms where you can buy wines from many wineries of the area, they are located in Barolo, Barbaresco, Canale, Canelli, Mango and Acqui Terme and there are many smaller local ones too.

And as Zorba mentions on the other post don't miss the Douja d'Or in Asti from 8th to 16th September, not to forget the Palio and the Feste del Sagre on each Sunday.
