great..thanks so much!
The maps on http://www.traghettiportofino.it/ suggest that these boats may not call at Monterosso, but run to Vernazza, before calling (sometimes after a lengthy stop) at other Cinque Terre villages not including Monterosso.
These boats are primarily for day cruises - apart from the departure times, they are not really a strictly timed ferry service, and sea conditions can affect their return times and ports of call.
That is really good to know, thank you very much!
Are the ferry/train schedules more limited from SML to CT or to Portofino during fall? We are going to Italy for 1st time Oct 9 for 3 wks and I really wanted to visit CT but maybe not stay there in case the weather was too rainy to hike.
The other option would be to skip Italian Riviera altogether and go further south-maybe Amalfi coast? I know weather is unpredictable; that's why decision making is tough! Thanks for any input!
Altho the ferries along this part of the coast may be limited in October I think you would be better sticking to this area rather than going South to the area around Amalfi. On this coast you have a great railway connexion all the way from Genoa to La Spezia with stations in all the CT villages.
In the case of the Amalfi coast you only have the railway from Naples to Sorrento which is not the best part coastal wise. From Sorrento you are dependant on Ferry or Bus and the ferries there are much less frequent than along this part of the coast.
On this coast you can visit from Portofino to Portovenere and all places in between. Scenery wise very similar in some respects and this year I have replaced my Amalfi pic for Portofino as my PC screen shot !
Are these ferries from SML to Cinque Terra operational in October?
