La Spezia - day trip to Portofino?

We will be based in La Spezia next week to visit Cinque Terra. Does anybody know if it is possible to arrange a day trip to Portofino (train/bus/boat?) returning at night?

You can easily take a train from La Spezia to Santa Margherita Ligure, from where there are buses to Portofino. On the local (Regionale) trains, the train journey takes about an hour each way and costs €4.40.

When friends come to stay with us we normally take an IC or Eurostar train (fast train) to Rapallo which is a bit dearer euro 7.50 and 10.50 respectively

which tale either 51mins or 41 mins. In Rapallo we take the ferry straight through to portofino and after a few hours here take the 82 bus back to SML. for aperitivos in Master before eventually taking the train back to La Spezia

Thank you Sydneynick for your prompt response. This is very helpful indeed! We have heard so much about Portofino, so really look forward to be able to visit as well during our short stay in this region.

Thank you Cudgey, great to get such quick feedback from Sydneynick and you. Aperitivo in SML sounds good too!

Hi,

As mentioned by Sydneynick its very easy and doable to visit Portofino for a day trip from La Spezia.

Just to add; its great to do one way by the local bus after taking the train to Santa Margherita to Portofino and on the return trip take the ferry back to SM from Portofino - or reversal - taking the ferry gives you another view of the coastline. ( its also walkable along the footpath from Portofino to SM - stunning views)

Have fun,

EM.

It is a good day trip to do over SMargherita/Portofino etc.

strongly recommend the boat going into Portofino from SMargherita as this does present the view which features in several movies.....then catching the bus is easy at the rear of the village.

.....another good stop is Camogli.

I have a trip log of a day trip if it helps.....just P Message me.

We took the train to Santa Margarita and from there a ferry to Portofino. In the way back, we walked from Portofino to Santa Margarita. It is a beautiful path to walk.

Thank you for your suggestion, Mausgrass; the ferry option into Portofino sounds like a great way to go! Depending on the weather will try and walk back to SML, as suggested by Lucciia and Ellemay.

We are currently still in Lucca and it is raining on and off. Say hello to the Sunshine Coast, my second favourite place in the world.
