Day trips from Rapallo

We are going to Rapallo this Friday and we are staying for a week. We always enjoy taking daytrips into the country or surrouding areas. (We have our own car). Can anyone suggest a trip we can take to get another great feel for this magnificent country. Thank you. We would like to be in the two hour maximum driving distance.

Rapallo has some importance for twentieth century European history. Consider going to Genoa and Carrara. Carrara is in northern Tuscany but close enough by train or car along the coast southward but inland from the coast. Marble quarries can be seen there. Riviera Levante in Liguria with rugged cliffs. Do look at the landscape at Manarola on the Sentiero-Azzuro for Cinque Terre. Genoa has much for visiting to keep you there for a day or two: Palazzo Bianco and Via Garibaldi has paintings, Palazzo Reale and Old University - Via Balbi. Sant'Agostino is known as a gothic church - the bell tower remains from the destruction from World War II. Cristoforo Colombo neighborhood and life in Genoa. Palazzo Rosso has paintings, Staglieno Cemetery. Near-by are Nervi and the Villa Durazzo-Pallavicini and Villa Doria - naval history museum. There are La Galleria d'Arte Moderna and Villa Luxoro with clocks. Garibaldi's importance to Italy can be found here. Consider visiting the Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi with panoramic views from the pathway cut into rock. Look at a street map of Genoa to plan your time. Inland are three or four places that are reachable by car: Varese-Ligure, two sets of mountains separated by the Trebbia River and road N45, Borzonasca, and Monte Gottero near road N525. Trebbia River has an importance for Italian history. Consider Lerici. Area west of Genoa long the Ligurian coast in the direction of the Italian border are worth visiting but the distance is great. Too many of them to begin an excursion that would make good travel sense. Genoa would be my first choice and the rocky Ligurian coastline second. Rapallo has enough to keep you busy there visiting the Portofino peninsula and the panoramic walking tour and small harbor and Santa Margherita-Ligure. Hope this helps.

The evening passeggiata along the waterfront is our favorite of all the towns we have visited.

Have dinners at Da Mario [closed Wed]. Ferry to Santa Margherita, lunch at Dal Alfredo [closed Mon]. Short trips by train to Camogli, Levanto, Sestri Levante and Genoa. Good hiking around Portofino:
