Driving London to Florence in January?

Driving London to Florence in January?

Hi everyone,

My partner and I might be going to a conference in Florence in late January; we are considering staying with family in London beforehand and driving, if we can have that much time away from work. I've looked at ViaMichelin, which is supremely helpful, but we're also interested in experiences, recommendations, etc. We probably don't have lots of time to make detours, but we do plan to be a bit leisurely about it. Also wondering about return trip - is it really expensive to drive one way and leave the car? Thanks!

British car rental companies generally do not allow taking their cars to mainland Europe. Apart from anything else, the driver would be on the wrong side.

You could, of course, take the Eurostar to Lille or Paris and pick up a rental car there. There is no problem with driving into Italy, but if you leave the car in Italy, there will be a very substantial one-way fee. The car has to be returned to France, either by being driven or on a truck.

Another point to consider is that visitors are not allowed to drive into the centre of Florence (or most other places in Italy).
