A pass is never worthwhile in Italy or France. All the fast trains have compulsory seat reservations, so passholders have to make the reservations and pay extra for them. For the best prices, buy from teh train companies soon after tickets go on sale, usually 4 months in Italy, 3 months in France, and 6 months for Eurostar.
