I'm getting very confused on where to buy, where not to buy and if to get a pass.

Itinery for 5 people

Rome to Venice

Venice to Genoa

Genoa to Nice

Nice to Paris

Paris to London.

Ay ideas would be appreciated

A pass is never worthwhile in Italy or France. All the fast trains have compulsory seat reservations, so passholders have to make the reservations and pay extra for them. For the best prices, buy from teh train companies soon after tickets go on sale, usually 4 months in Italy, 3 months in France, and 6 months for Eurostar.
