Car hire

Hi all,

Does anyone have any recommendations where to a hire a car in or around Venice as we plan to drive after our stay in Venice to Trieste and then onto Croatia.

Many thanks in advance.

John

Pick up at Piazzale Roma, at the end of the road into Venice, from where you can easily get onto the bridge to the mainland. Some web sites incorrectly list this as "downtown" or "train station".

It you pick up in Italy and drop off in Croatia, there will be a very substantial one-way fee. The car has to be returned to Italy.

I should have said that two reputable agencies in Australia that arrange cheap rentals with the major companies are www.autoeurope.com.au and www.driveaway.com.au

If you pick up a car at Piazzale Roma, you must drive on the Ponte della Liberta' di reach the mainland: be warned that there are active speed cameras on that bridge which will deliver a fine if you speed over the 70 km/h limit + 5% allowance.

If you book through a car hire comparison site just be careful that you do not book with Goldcar !

Another one to avoid is Locauto/Enterprise.

We are going to Italy next year and want to hire a car in Rome - probably not from the airport - maybe from Rome Termini. Have had some terrible experiences so would be grateful for any current advice - we are renting for 33 days.

Autoeurope is a broker offering discount prices and good service so you could book through them and go with one of the major rental companies.

Where will you be going though? Remember having a car at large cities is a liability. Plan your car rental strategically.
