Riff M asks a relevant question. Also, how far afield are you prepared to go.

If the Ayuntament is open to the public - that's the really big building on the seaward side of the square - go inside for a look. Beautiful interior and some important local art works on show. goodness knows how you can tell what the opening hours though. Perhaps a local can help.

Chances are there will be some sort of protest going on while you're there. Maybe even multiple ones. Get a sandwich at one of the sausage stalls at opposite corners of the Plaça and soak up the culture.

in a radius of 10-15 minutes walking distance you'll have quite a few of the 'must sees' in town (La Boqueria market, Cathedral, Palau de la Musica, Santa Maria del Mar, Picasso Museum...). Plus dozens of not so touristy places, art galleries, museums, shops and cafes. Your choice!
