Munich to Regensburg by car or train?
Save

We are first timers to europe and are a bit worried about driving in Germany. We arrive into Munich early 31st April and will have 2 days there. We were then planning to hire a car and drive to Regensburg on a Thursday morning. Is the road less busy than the Autobahns? The reason we want a car is that we are hoping to trace my partner's family history and would perhaps need to drive around to different places within Regensburg. Or is it easy enough to get around using public transport?

Another question... Does anyone know of a Catholic convent in the area that would have taken in orphaned girls in the 1930s -40s and where there would be archives kept of that era?

If we didn't have a car can we get from Regensburg to Budapest by train rather than having to drive back to Munich to drop off the car?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm at the point of having to book things soon.

Thanks

1. There is absolutely no need for a car to get from Munich to Regensburg. Take the train. You can look up connections on http://www.bahn.de If you use regional trains you can use the Bayern-Ticket - check this forum for the countless threads on that topic, this is discussed several times per day.

Driving around within a city is not necessary, and not necessarily a good idea unless there is, for example, someone with walking difficulties in the party. Regensburg has a bus network that goes everywhere. The centre is walkable and partly pedestrianized anyway.

2. I would, first of all, contact the archive of the diocese and send them an enquiry. All contact data is here: http://www.bistum-regensburg.de/borPage000840.asp Given the number of convents in Regensburg you'll need to be as specific as possible.

Another option is the archive of the city. Contact data in here: http://www.regensburg.de/sixcms/detail.php/10536

3. Regensburg is on the railway line to Vienna from where you can continue to Budapest. No need to return to Munich, and no need to bother with driving. Again, check connections on http://www.bahn.de

Good luck with your research!

Documentation about Regensburg can also be suspected at the central Bavarian State Archive in Munich, so you could send them an enquiry, too: http://www.gda.bayern.de/archive/hauptstaatsarchiv/

Send those e-mails or letters well in time, and include as many details as you know, so they have keywords to look for. Responses can take some weeks.

Normal route from Munich Airport (MUC) to Regensburg is bus to Freising train station and from there by train. Best deal for this is a Bayern Ticket (Bavaria Ticket).

http://www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/prices/germany-regional/bavaria-ticket.shtml

Covers the complete route plus the city buses in Regensburg.

DB timetable (using lazy shortcuts)

Start: MUC

Destination: R
