Nice to Grand Canyon du Verdon - worth doing?

Hi,

This forum has been a wealth of information for my up coming trip - so thank you to everyone. Just over 3 weeks to go and doing some last minute planning. We are based in Nice for 10 days and plan to do all the surrounding areas either by bus all train but just wondering should we hire a car for a day or so and go to Grand Canyon du Verdon? Is it an easy direct trip from Nice and worth seeing ? Should we also put the drive to St Tropez on our list of things to do?

Thank you

It is a fairly easy drive from Nice to the Grand Canyon area - around 2 hours - but the road around the gorge is not easy. It's adequately wide, but has almost continuous sharp bends. Often there are no safety rails to stop you from going into the gorge if you misjudge a corner.

Having said that, it is one of the most marvellous natural sights I have seen, and well worth the drive.

I think St Tropez is mainly a summer resort. There may not be much happening in December.

Thanks Sydneynick.

Not sure about the sharp bends and no safety rails to stop one from going over the gorge!! :(

I don't supose there would be day tours from nice to the gorge - would there?

Thanks

We found it not too scary, but are used to the French Alps! The gorge is a lovely place to visit, and at this time of year should be very quiet, so you can concentrate on your driving, not so much on others' behaviour! We visited one Feb when there was still snow around - lovely! Thjere are places to stop for photos etc. We did once see someone having a conducted tour with there as part of it, but don't know details. Maybe that's an opening for us?

Some photos of the area give some idea of the immense size of the gorges though it is really difficult to capture in a photo.

and some blogging I did as well.

As nick says, very spectacular and worth the drive but a bit scary. I would check with someone local about road conditions at that time. A bit of ice could cause a nasty slide and there truly are great swathes of roads with absolutely no barriers at all.

St Tropez in December? The drive is not especially attractive but at least you will get there in reasonable time, unlike in Summer. But probably not a lot there to see this time of year and a risk of not so good weather to boot.

The Gorges: as everyone says its a car drive - there is an coach excursion company in Nice - Santa Azur in av Jean Medecin - and they specialise in unusual day trip destinations at around 50 - 60 euro per person, usually uncluding lunch. Its select days in the month and only if there is demand, but they do do a Gorges du Verdon trip. Somehow I don't think it will be on their December schedule.

You can easily do this yourself. The roads aren't really that dangerous. On certain sections, the roads are a bit narrow both two-way traffic, but usually, there aren't many cars on the road so during the day time, you can easily accommodate each other.

If you drive to the Gorge, I suggest you go further west and at least spend an overnight somewhere.

Santa azura and voyages-christine don't list the Gorges for the December-they are doing mainly xmassy themed trips

One of the mini bus tour companies might still do the Gorges de Verdon in December depending on demand but they are pricey -if i remember rightly it was almost 150 euros per person when i looked at the tour leaflet at the beginning of the month -i didn't actually take the leaflet with me so i can't recall the tour company name.

If i go past the tourist info place i'll pick one up -otherwise the leaflets tend to get left at hotel receptions

Thanks everyone :)

RTS Tours do a 9 hour trip to the Gorge in a 8 seater minivan at the cost of 600 euro for the four of us!

Husband not to keen to drive due to the sharp bends, no safety rails, possibility if ice on the roads and driving on the opposite side of the road to us - mmm will have to think!!

Cheers
