Is it necessary to hire a car in Hyeres?

Hello, we are planing our trip to Hyeres in three weeks time, we are a big family group, two adults and five boys (aged 8-11)

We will be staying in a flat in the centre cry close to the tourist office. I wonder if it is really necessary to hire a car or just to use public transport or hire bikes? We will be staying for ten days. Also any tips of what is good to do (in particular travelling with very active boys)

if you want easy access to the various beaches of the Giens peninsula, you're going to need a car... there is a bus but i understand that it is not always running frequently, and even if, takes a while to take you from the center to the coast (but please look up the route and schedules because i tend to rely on a car when in Hyeres)...

bikes could be useful but the roads leading to the Giens peninsula are wide and heavily trafficked and i wouldn't want my 8-year old riding a bike on them...

the old center and the new part of town are nice, and you can walk to a lot of places around (restaurants, markets, shops, old city streets), but there's definitely not enough to do for 10 days, especially with 3 active kids; again, that's why a car will be helpful to get to the various beaches, the port, nearby towns, the large supermarket (Casino) at the edge of town, etc...

i'm sure you've done your research, but the beach is going to be your principal activity for the kids... also, it won't be cheap but you may want to take a boat ride to the island of Porquerolles, which has beautiful nature and beaches...

Yes hire a car. The beach we use is served by public transport which gets very busy as certain times of the day - its also not the pleasant waiting in the bus queue in the full sunshine!

Also it will be useful for other things as Assouli points out and heaven forbid (but it does happen in August) it rains you can get out and see more of the region.

Thank you very much! I think you are right, I was just hoping not to have to drive but it will make life easier and I won't have the kids complaining at the bus stop!
