La Carmarque other than Arles

Is there any other town or village in the Carmarque area that is quaint, picture perfect and worth a detour near Arles? We will be based in Aix en Provence in September and know our day trip destinations in the area north, east and south of Aix but we do not know of pleasant stops near N113/A54 between Aix and Arles without going north towards Cavaillon.

The two main places of tourist interest in the Camargue are Aigues-Mortes and Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. See any guide book.

Arles is outside the CamarGue (note spelling). Cavaillon is certainly not a beautiful place.

You probably will find Saintes Maries de la Mer of interest as it is unquestionably in the Camargue. I am not sure I would describe it as ¨quaint¨ but it is typical Camarguais.

The towns in the Camargue are OK - never that fond or Saintes Maries de la Mer and Aigues Mortes is a tourist trap - although historically worth a visit.

Have a look at the Alpilles National Park that is to the west of Aix - and Oh yes - Cavallion is not quaint!

You´ll generally see flamingos in the brackish lakes around and between le Grau du Roi and Aigues Mortes. They are timid birds so you generally will not see them up close.

You could also check the Ornithological Park to the east in the Camargue:

We visit Aigues Mortes and the Ornithological Park in September most years and there are always vast numbers of flamingoes there then. Our visitors take many photos as soon as the see any, but then we always see huge numbers further round on our walk. September is usually a good time to visit.
