UK-Frejus Roadtrip

We are looking forward to 2 weeks on the southern coast of France in August-staying in Frejus. Last time we did this was 6 years ago and I completed the trip in one hit-stopping near dijon for an hour for a nap. this time, I want to try and incorporate a night stop. Can anybody recommend anywhere or have any tips!?

Depends on your budget and the type of hotel - chain hotel or character hotel.

Nuits St Georges just south of Dijon is a nice little town just off the Autoroute with a variety of hotels to suit all pockets and taste.

If possible as you are travelling in August try and avoid the weekends for your trip down

Bourgogne is the natural region for an overnight stop. It is directly on the autoroute, there are charming towns and villages, vineyards, you may spend an hour or so for sightseeing, and you find some of the best food in France there.

Last time, we visited Chateau Clos Vougeout (takes an hour or so) and drove to our hotel, jumped into the pool, strolled through the park, had a cocktail on the terrace and a fantastic, reasonably-priced menu in the restaurant. What do you want more? http://www.chateau-saulon.com/en

Alternatively, you can stay in Beaune which is a fantastic medieval town with a historic hospital (now museum) and a wonderful opportunity to get stylishly drunk: http://www.marcheauxvins.com/?lang=en

Our journey from home in the UK to the Channel ports is only 90 minutes but, even so, Dijon is as far as we ever aim to go southbound on day 1. If you're starting from Birmingham, you might consider Reims or Troyes. It will mean more driving on day 2 but you'll split the total travel time more evenly between the two days. Both will be long drives, though.
