Do I need an international driver's licence for car hire?

Just wondering whether I will need an international licence for hiring a car in Tours next month? I'm an Australian driver, over 30. I know previous posts recommend it, but is it actually NECESSARY?

Thanks!

No, not in France.

Not in France although it doesn't hurt to have one. Remember what you need is an International Driver's Permit, not an International Driver's License. The IDL is a scam document they sell online. The IDP, if you are getting it from Australia, is probably isssued by NRMA, and the cost should be no more than A$20.

Thanks for the help - i think I'll get one...it's $25 for NRMA members in Oz and I might be driving in Turkey as well so prob won't hurt to have it.

When you get your IDP, the NRMA will also give you a booklet showing the traffic signs used in other countries. Read this carefully: some of the important signs (like "No vehicles permitted") are different from those used in Australia.

Nope - dont bother: complete waste of time and money. None of the hire companies will ask for it, and producing it will only confuse issues - they will want to know why you apparently have two licences, one of which isn't a legally valid document.

An IDP is an internationally recognised document, which is required for driving in many countries if you have a licence issued outside that country. It is required in Italy, for example.

I cannot believe that it would ever be disadvantageous to have one.

Hi --

Actually it makes an excellent ID, especially if you only carry a copy of your passport, as I do.

Additionally, although most Rental Agents don't ask for it, most rental agencies require them to, which they would know if they read their Employee Manuals carefully, so occasionally you'll be asked for it, no matter what the country's requirement is.

I have read conflicting advice so rang the hire car company who said an International Drivers Permit was needed in France. It was also advised by the NRMA where we picked up one today. $25 for IDP + $2 for the cover. Plus the cost of a photo if you don't have one with you. Whether we are asked for it or not we figured it would be best to have it on us if needed. The handbook will come in handy I am sure.

I have rented cars in France, Belgium, Germany and the UK within the last few years (including only 2 weeks ago). I have NEVER even been asked for anything other than my regular driver's license from home (Canadian Provincial) and passport. Any regulations I have read merely state that your license must be in the Latin Alphabet.

A rental desk may ask you for an IDP if they perceive you are taking the car into Italy or some other country requiring it.

If you are driving but in France, nothing precludes your having one but I should consider it a waste of $25.
