Well done, Abbeyshrule, Co Longford: Tidy Towns Winner 2012

Even though it doesn't feature much on TA - nor, indeed, does Co Longford as a whole - that doesn't stop the village of Abbeyshrule in the south of the county from being the big winner in the 2012 Tidy Towns competition:

The competition is not just about being tidy; it incorporates The Built Environment; Wildlife and Natural Amenities; Landscaping and Waste Minimisation, among ten categories.

Congratulations, Abbeyshrule! Stand by for lots of visitors from within Ireland wanting to check out all the hard work, cooperation and ideas brought to fruition that is involved in your journey to the top:

Well done also to Ennis, Westport, Clonakilty, Killarney and indeed to all the participants.

If you are heading west or northwest from Dublin, it might be worthwhile diverting through Abbeyshrule for a look at this village, and the work of this proud community.

Thanks for the links Uasal and congratulations to Abbeyshrule and the other winners.

We are delighed in Ennis to win the tidiest large urban centre once more. It is some achievement for a town as large as Ennis to be only one point behind the overall winner.

The tidy towns initiative is a brilliant idea. I have been around a lot of the country over the past few months and it is beautiful to pass through all the lovely villages and towns.

Well done to everyone involved, because it takes a lot of hard work by a lot of people.

Tralee got a gold in it's category as well. This is due in a large part to teams of volunteers that go out regularly and keep the streets as clean as possible.

Congrats Abbeyshrule. I used to visit regularly for the excellent air show (alas discontinued).

Well done Tralee also. The town is really on the up and up these days

Well done Abbeyshurle :) I've heard of the tidy towns, but that was due to a google search researching Trim, and it seems a good idea.
