Train/bus travel from Longford

I’m planning my first solo trip to Ireland in October. I have been several times before but always with other people. I do not plan on renting a car and I’m using Longford as my base. How possible is train and bus travel from this location?

Trains go to Dublin and Sligo and any points on the line on the way.

You can get buses to Mayo, Cavan, Monaghan and Galway, but with the exception of Mayo, services are infrequent.

Longford is not an ideal base to not have a car. One of the larger cities is a better bet or if you want somewhere in The Midlands, Athlone or Port Laoise.
