Accomodation before and after a day tour to Orkneys

Can anyone suggest where would be a good location to get accomodation near John O Groats. We are doing a day tour of the Orkneys that leaves 9:00 am from John O Groats and returns at 8:45 p.m. We would drive the northern coast towards Thurso on the way there and get accomodation for 2 nights so we could arrive back there after the full day tour and leave the next day down the east coast past Wick and south to Inverness. Yes, it is a flying trip but we are on limited time and thought the day tour would give us a great overview of the Orkneys to plan a longer stay next time. We have heard that John O Groats isn't necesssarily the best place to stay so we thought somewhere near might be better and would drive to John O Groats in time for the tour leaving at 9:00 a.m

Has anyone also been on this day tour I think jogferry runs it ????

Any info gratefully received.

Hi Verity,

Depending on your dates, you can do a day trip to the Orkney mainland from Inverness, if that might be a better overnight base for you. I appreciate you say you want to drive the North Coast, but it could still be worth considering. You would travel by coach from Inverness to the ferry and back.

Jogferry operate the Inverness trip from 1 June to 2 September - http://www.jogferry.co.uk/inver.htm

The trip certainly covers the key points of interest on the island, though if time permits Orkney is best taken a little slower to really appreciate.
