Train from Glasgow to St. Andrews

Arriving from US Glasgow late morning and next destination is St. Andrews. Not needing to arrive by fixed time except would be ideal to check into hotel by early afternoon. I'm planning to take a train and looking for travel tips. Should I purchase my train ticket in advance (advantageous from cost or availability standpoint)? Curious since Amtrak train prices in US increase exponentially as the travel date approaches.

Thanks in advance!

Tip one, there is no station actually in St Andrews, buy your ticket to Leuchars, from there it's a short bus ride or a taxi from the rank into St Andrews. The whole trip is around 3.5 hours. Bus to either Paisley station or into Glasgow city centre, then train from Glasgow Central Station to Edinburgh, then change trains for an Aberdeen bound train and get off at Leuchars.

See www.scotrail.co.uk anytime tickets cost £26.30 no advantage to buying early and it's flexible so you can travel on any service.....

There are 2 possible routes by train or bus.

You can take the 500 Airport Express bus to Queen St Station in Glasgow. Then a train to Leuchars changing at Edinburgh Haymarket, followed by a short bus ride to St.Andrew's.

Cheap Advance Purchase tickets can be booked on the Scotrail site from Glasgow to :Leuchars.

There is however an hourly direct bus Glasgow Airport-St.Andrew's.Timetable on the Stagecoach site under service X24.

I think the least hassle is the X24 Stagecoach direct, I'm assuming you will have Clubs in tow?

If so think of putting them in the hold of the Bus and that's it until you step off the Bus at St Andrews Bus Station.

Now look at the alternatives? Bus to Paisley Gilmour St then Train to Glasgow Central then Train to Edinburgh or Bus to Glasgow Queen St then Train to Edinburgh.

Then either way you still have to get another Train to Leuchars the Bus to St Andrews!

That's a lot of chopping and changing with Clubs and Luggage in tow!

And it won't be any faster by Train by the time you make all the connections work.

Tip 1a (sub-section 2.6): This.

Tip 2: don't tip (the bus driver, that is).

There are always plenty of taxis waiting at the bus station if it's too far to carry your luggage/ clubs. If you are staying in the likes of Rusacks, its hardly worth getting into a taxi. 3 minute walk, all downhill. I normally say take a train but in this instance, bus is better.

You might be better off taking the bus from in front of the Glasgow airport, Stagecoach bus X24 direct to St. Andrews. (hourly departures). Just buy your ticket from the bus driver. If you take the train you'll have to change in Edinburgh for Leuchars and then take a bus from the Leuchars train station into St. Andrews. (there is no train station in St. Andrews). You can google times on stagecoachbus.com
