Where to stay

In the planning stages of a two week international trip to selected cities including four days in London during May 2011. Will be 4 senior adults, no major handicaps........... Will spend time sightseeing Buckingham Palace, Westminister, London Eye, etc. Or might consider escorted day tours.....comments??? Will arrive from U.S. to Gatwick Airport. Would prefer lodging in good area with small to medium non-chain hotel with pub, maybe restaurant or local restaurants, shopping, etc with transportation options throughout city. Willing to spend 175 pounds per night, but must be something special. Would appreciate all help. Oh, will be leaving London via Train to Paris. Would appreciate all comments recommendations.

Is your rate of £175 a night for a room for four or for a room for two (and you'll want two rooms)? Since London has plenty of pubs and masses of restos you'll need not limit yourself to a property with pub or resto on site, and transport is quite good throughout central London.

The Darlington Hyde Park has rooms with one double bed and two single beds; the rack rate offered at the website is on the high side but TALFers have found lower rates by contacting the hotel directly. The Premier Inns may lose a point from your wishlist by being chain hotels, but they're quite good for what they are, and the County Hall or Euston location may have rooms on offer from £89 a night - a bargain for central London.

The Lime Tree Hotel, not far from Victoria, does have a quad room on offer with four single beds, and the rate suits your budget - could be worth a look.

Sorry. I meant to say 175 pounds per room for two people each. Thanks.

Right, then, that opens up a handful of other options.

Consider the very pleasant Montague on the Gardens in Bloomsbury; not badly situated for sightseeing but also very handy for St Pancras station and the Eurostar. The Rubens at the Palace near Victoria may appeal as well. And I'd still say have a look at the Premier Inns; they're quite decent hotels, well worth a stay with very comfortable beds and nice big rooms.

It could be worthwhile seeing what the Renaissance Chancery Court has on offer for your dates. It's a lovely hotel very well situated for sightseeing with loads of transport options nearby.
