Getting to Hilltop (Beatrix Potter's house)

We are a retired Kwi couple travelling through the UK IN June/July this year. We will have a car and will drive in to Bowness-on-Windermere where we hope to be by mid-morning, then stay the night, leaving the next day about lunchtime. We hope to get across the lake to see Hilltop and also want to check out the Beatrix Potter experience. Can anyone help please with guidance on how we are best to get to Hilltop - leave the car in Bowness and ferry across the lake, connecting with a bus? Or are we able to take the car on the ferry and drive up to Hilltop? How frequent are the ferries? Are we best to do HIlltop the first afternoon and then Beatrix Potter experience the next morning, or vice versa? We are wanting to get away before lunchtime on that second day if possible. Any advice greatly appreciated

The ferry from Bowness towards Hawkeshead is a chain ferry that carries cars and runs several times an hour. There can be long queues at busy times.

Hilltop admission is by timed ticket, 1st come 1st served. Quite often all tickets are sold long before closing time. Best to start early straight after breakfast, take the ferry and get there at opening time.

Options:

1.By car... drive around the lake (allow 45 mins.) or via Ferry (every 20mins) at £4.00 single per car

2.On foot... the 'Cross Lakes Experience' from Pier 3, Bowness Bay (£9.20 return) boat + shuttle-bus. Or cheaper option... walk to Ferry (15 min from Bowness Bay) £0.50 as foot passenger, then catch shuttle-bus to Hill Top and Hawkshead.

3.Organised Tour... join half-day guided mini-coach tour. Mountain Goat Ltd. have a Beatrix Potter tour that starts at 12.00 and will pick-up at your hotel or guest house (£25... includes afternoon cruise on Coniston Water).

All above exclude ticket entry to Hill Top (£7.00). Because the property is quite small the National Trust have a timed ticket entry to avoid overcrowding inside the house (unfortunately only organised tour groups can pre-book time slots). Most summer afternoons and weekends v.busy (avoid!)... Get there early (10.15) opens 10.30.

When in Hawkshead village the Beatrix Potter Gallery (NT) has original drawings and artwork from the books and is worth a visit (£4.60... + discount if you show Hill Top ticket). Note: both properties closed on Fridays!

Tip: If you're visiting a few National Trust properties/gardens when in the UK it might be worth getting membership of the NZ Historic Places Trust or the QE11 National Trust as they both have a reciprocal agreement with our National Trust in the UK.... and then (remember to bring your membership card) you can visit the above for free!!
