Hear, hear, GB. During our trip to England this year, we stayed in 4 cottages in various parts of the country. The one in Stratford-upon-Avon was huge, had everything that opens and shuts, looked a bit flash but then we noticed the mould on the window handles, the sink wasn't as clean as it could be (not by a long shot) and the towels hadn't been dried properly and smelled very manky (so bad we couldn't use them until we'd washed them again and made sure they were properly dry). Little things maybe, but it left the wrong impression about what else might be wrong with the place. By comparison, we spent a fortnight in Port Isaac in a little cottage that didn't have all the bells and whistles and the kitchen was small but functional, but it was very comfortable and was scrupulously clean from top to bottom and the towels were large, white, fluffy and smelled divine. Such wonderful memories :-) I know which property I'd gladly return to ...

Our family and I have just returned after our 5th year at Bonscale House one of Swarthbeck cottage properties. We all love the stunning location, ideal for serious fell walkers nestled at the side of High Street, perfect for Howtown Steamer, good walks galore from the back door. Huge pantry , freezer space, warm, dishwasher, table tennis room. Superb sunsets onto the front door and first class elevated views over Ullswater. When we come back off the fells and leave our boots in the hallway, we feel so fortunate to be in such an idyllic position. This is the perfect place to bring a young family, space, streams to paddle in, dens galore, tree swing and Ullswater for canoeing. There are properties in the area which are beautifully equipped and furnished for which pay a far higher premium, none will match Bonscale for its views and space.

Five of us stayed at Ravensghyll Cottage for bank holiday weekend, we saw this thread and were slightly worried but decided to ignore the negative comments and thank goodness we did! Reading through these again actually astound me and I can't understand what more you could want. Of course it is basic but it is clean, warm, homely not to mention huge and in such a beautiful location ~ the lake and the beautiful surroundings are right on your doorstep, why would you care about a few cobwebs!? There was everything we could possibly need, a really well stocked kitchen! It was very cheap, it would have been the same price or more expensive to stay in a bunk barn or hostel but this place was huge and all to ourselves, we could have happily stayed for a lot longer than two nights!

We had an excellent time, the owners were really nice and friendly and let us have four kayaks and a boat for no extra charge and brought them down to the lake for us. We had a BBQ in the lovely garden and we were all so happy that we chose this cottage!

I've sent a message to Trip Advisor to see if we can leave a proper review as it's not currently set up and I have lots of pictures to add too. If they're not able to do it, I'll try and add them to here but it's not fair that this is the first thing people see when researching the place!

I stayed there with Helen for the bank holiday. I agree with everything she said and will be leaving a review as soon as I can (with my photos). I'm going to try to go back in sept. If you think this isn't genuine check my profile and other reviews or private message me (can you do that on here?) and I'll tell you about it

The pics look fine don't they. Part of the problem is that there are several cottages to stay in at Swarthbeck Farm. I can't comment on any other buildings, I stayed in Swarthbeck Cottage. It was disgusting. That was November 2011. I hope it has been gutted and improved since then.

Holiday Rentals are no longer listed on TA unless they are using "Flipkey" or "Holiday Rentals" TA partner sites, as their agent, so you may not be able to leave a Review here.

Glad you had a good time, and must say that, in your pics, the place looks OK. Hope it is like that for others.....

We have just returned from a first visit to Auterstone and it was fine. Because of some of the scurrilous reviews, we nearly didn't go - as we only saw them after booking, but had a very pleasant time. This was our first visit to the Lake District and our first meeting of the owners.

The positives included 1 The views from the cottage over the lake are spectacular and the quietness wonderful - this being the peak of the holiday season

2 The consideration of the owners - including a day's free use of their motor boat and 4 kayaks and borrowing mountain bikes as wanted

3 The cheapness - £420 for a week in a property which has 4 good sized bedrooms. Last year we had a caravan in Cornwall at nearly 2x price. This has to be the best value holiday we have ever paid for.

4 The owners were happy for us to have 3 extras (grandchildren) for a couple of days making 11 of us in all - how many other places adopt such a laid back approach?

The only downsides were that you need a fairly robust vehicle to get up the track to that collage - our Ford Galaxy was fine but it would have destroyed a mini , and yes we did have to do a bit of hoovering and cobwebing. An hour of hard work though got the place even up to my wife's meticulous standards and we never looked back. Some of the negative reviews on this site bear no resemblance to the real thing in August 2013
