Canterbury or Dover?

We're coming to England in late August (overnight flight from US arriving Heathrow early AM) and plan to spend our opening night and second night in either Canterbury or Dover. We'll see the sights in both towns, but which would be the better place to spend two nights? Canterbury looks like it offers more in terms of restaurants, pubs and nightlife, but Dover offers the ocean, scenic views, etc.

Canterbury. Dover may have sea views but it is a busy working port.

Canterbury - no contest. Dover is a functional town and, apart from the Castle, has nothing to recommend staying for.

Agree with comments above - Canterbury without any doubt.

It really is "no contest".

Canterbury every day of the week. For ever.

If you want to see the sea, drive to the coast (Whitstable, Herne Bay) and then come back to Canterbury.

A similiar thread from 2 months ago came to the same conclusion:

I would just advise to ignore the final post on that one though.

Also comment #5 above, be aware this is the owner promoting their own hotel (it is against TA guidelines to promote one's own business on the forums).

Dover has the fantastic castle, lovely seaviews and plenty of history, but I also like Canterbury and would recommend that for a vist :)

Canterbury is the nicer place to stay, without any doubt IMO.

But Dover is for me a more exciting place to visit. I just love the seemingly incongruous mix of a proud and very historic castle, beautiful natural environment, and busy (though in parts a bit seedy) modern port - all in one.
