Base location near Shaftesbury

Hi, thinking about spending 4 nights in the Shaftesbury (Dorset area), basing ourselves and taking day trips in the area - down to Dorchester, Corfe Castle up to Cheddar Gorge, maybe Bradford-on-Avon, and Sherborne. Would anyone recommend Shaftesbury as a good central location? Any other options that you think might be better? We'd be looking at B&B or something like that as I guess most self-contained accommodation usually like to book for the week.

Hi. I see from your other post you are planning on staying in Monmouth too. You could visit Cheddar and Bradford on Avon on your way from Monmouth to Dorset.

Shaftesbury is a lovely town - day trips to the other locations you mention are doable from there. However Sherborne or Dorchester may work better as a base. The A350 between Shaftesbury and Blandford is quite narrow with several small villages and hair-pin bends. It can easily take 1 hour to drive from Shaftesbury to Dorchester.

What time of the year is your trip?

We'll be in the area in June. Your local knowledge on roads is very helpful, especially if we're heading out for day trips...thanks!

Have stayed in the Shaftesbury area several times. Evening meal facilities rather limited in the town, but lots of country pubs. It is a good centre for the places you want to visit. Self catering cottages on a farm we have used twice, for a family get together and for 14 person walking group, accept bookings based on the Center Parcs model, but are flexible as shown on the web-site.

I recommend Dorchester as a good central location (it is the capitol of Dorset) and do trips from there to Shaftsbury (visit the whole village in a few hours - take photos of Golden Hill etc before going on to Cheddar Gorge and surround area, Early afternoon and stop for dinner in Sherborne. Day trip to Corfe Castle and nearby coast. Once you get here you will see many other things you'll want to do.

Thanks, that's very helpful. It's always hard when coming from Aus to know how long it takes to travel between sites.
