Insurance on borrowed car

We are going from Canada to the UK. Two trips.

1. Perth, Scotland to Le Mans, France in a classic car owned by my brother.

2. Road trip around Ireland, both Northern and Southern in a Land Rover Discovery owned by my brother.

He will be present on both trips.

He is unable to add either of us, me or my husband, to his insurance policy.

We are trying to find a company that will sell us an insurance policy to cover these trips. Our insurance in Canada is very different and my brother can drive our cars with no problem.

Our own insurance would cover us for rental cars no problem, including in the finicky Ireland situation.

The idea of the trip was for us to enjoy his classic cars, but it is now looking like he will have to be the chauffeur on some very long road trips.

Has anyone been able to resolve this issue?

Insurers will want a UK address - otherwise they cant' be confident that you won't run away to Canada without paying them if there's a problem of any sort.

As you've discovered, the way motor insurance works is very different between our continents. Over here the insurance is focused on the car, not the person. As your brother owns the vehicles, he has to find the policy(s) - if necessary by changing insurer. There are specialist brokers who can do this - but they would want your brother to be policy holder, with you as additional drivers named on that policy.

I did a quick google on your behalf and found:

Well if we were insured to drive the car there would be no issue of payment, just like when we rent a car. Insurance covers the loss. Not that we have ever had to claim in the 70 years of combined driving we have.

rcspeirs, thank you. Yes, that is what we found. But unfortunately he cannot change insurance companies as he collects classic cars and it is just way too complicated. We cannot be added to his current policy. It may be renting is the only way, but that takes the fun out of driving his cars.

MartinC, thank you. I will look at that.

You could try this lot but I have no direct experience of them so you/your brother should do some checking on them.

Ultimately, it's your brother who should confirm he's happy as he will be the one with a bent car and no recourse if the temporary insurer won't pay up.

If the classic car is valuable I doubt you would get cover for that at all, and the type of cover you get from day insurers tends to be UK only.

You would have no problem if you hired a car, but getting insurance on someone else's private car is v.difficult for non-EEA licence holders. This has a lot to do with the difficulty of verifying valid licences/driver offences for non-EEA residents which makes you a risk the standard insurers won't touch. On a hire car, where the car company can always attack your credit card and has the resource to spread the risk across a massive fleet, they are less worried.

This - admittedly old - article from the Telegraph suggests some options:

I think your brother will need to contact an insurance broker, most likely. If he cant/doesn't want to move his existing insurance, he's going to need a separate policy to cover you (where he is the policy-holder).

Won't work - having 2 policies for the same risk is an invitation for insurers to decline to meet a claim. The Op needs to insure herself but with the brother noted on the policy as an interested party. The Day insurance people will know what to do.

Thank you all for being so helpful. My brother has indeed talked to his broker at length, nothing they can do without changing his already complicated policy. This makes no sense for our three weeks of road trips.

Also a no on the second policy for him.

I tried the first link MartinC offered, but none of them will touch a 1977 Jag. Will have a go for the more modern Land Rover.

It is a road block we never even anticipated, a first for us.
