A week mid-September: need an advice, please

Hello travellers, me and my wife are coming to Chania for hiking / sea/ sightseeing.

Plan to stay a couple of days in Chania and for the rest of it stay in some quiet village

with easy access to good beach / trails and nice simple accomodation.. What should we choose as a base: Hora Sfakion? Sougia? Palaiochora? Some less known village? (we plan to have a car)

And where to go first?

On the map everything looks the same.. so please, advise.

I vote for Paleochora, big village. It has two beaches, one with sand and one with gravel. In case of strong wind the gravel is perfect. In the sorroundings there are more secluded beaches to discover.

We have stayed at Sougia the past two vacations. There is good hiking in the area. The village is small but has good tavernas and hotels but no ATM so you need to bring cash. It is also connected by ferry to the Libyan Sea villages by ferry. That gives you access to Paleochora Agia Romouli for the hike up the Samara Gorge and all the way over to Loutro and if you want Chora Sfakion.

Here are images of Sougia and the ferry trip.
