Two days in PR

We have two days in PR at the very end of August. We wont have a car, and will have to rely on local transport. We want to go to the museum of Northern BC, but that will probably only take a half day? We would like to learn more about local culture and wondered if we could get to Pike Island? Any suggestons for things we might do?

It's a nice walk along the waterfront to the Memorial Waterfront Park.

Points of interest:

The memorial wall where each brick is dedicated to a PR resident who lost their life at sea (including one who was on the Titanic).

Colourful artwork created by schoolchildren telling the story of the salmon run.

The Japanese fishing boat that was lost at sea in the 1980's only to turn up in PR!

The area of Cow Bay + the sunken gardens, government hall and totem poles/carving shed. For a tasty fish meal, visit Dolly's fish restaurant.

The shop on Main Street known as "Prince Rupert's Other Museum" - an Aladdin's cave of memorabilia.

The Museum of BC (we spent 2.5 hours here)

The Interpretative Centre

From the Cow Bay area, you can walk up the fairly steep hill through a residential area where there are colourful houses built on stilts. There is a tarmac trail that leads you back down to the harbour.

Hi

the boat tour to go see wildlife which takes off from Cow Bay is worth considering. http://www.adventuretours.net/

try to find out if they have a bus that goes to the Cannery Historic site in Port Edward.

The Museum of the North is definitely worth it.

try to stay at or near the Crest Hotel as it is the shortest walking distance to the museum etc.... you can see eagles at the tender docks usually around noon which is on the north side of Crest hotel. There is a B&B at Cow Bay worth considering; see pictures.

Breakers Pub in Cow Bay has really good seafood chowder.

Do not bother going to the indoor shopping mall;

this is a set of pictures to give you an idea https://flic.kr/s/aHsjYXiXHF

The Museum of Northern BC is great, but you don't need half a day. Two hours is about right.

Opa Sushi is excellent, which is in Cow Bay. It rivals the best sushi you can get in Vancouver.

Also, the North Pacific Cannery National Historic Site is well worth a visit. I don't know if they have public transit or tours out there, but it truly is a fascinating place worthy of 2+ hours.

Seaplane tour of the local area! Contact Inland Air Charters. The north coast is even more beautiful from above :)

North Pacific cannery is a must see, there is local transit to Port Edward, which is about 15min out of town.

If you like walking, butze rapids trail is pretty easy (only a couple hills) and about 5.5km. It would take about an hour and a half at a slow leisurely pace. It's on the way to port Edward and the buses will stop there.

The cowbay area has excellent boutique shops, and amazing food options! Cow Bay Cafe for Italian; Opa for Japanese; Dolly's for seafood; Cowpochinos for coffee; and the Wheelhouse for local craft beer (gillnetter is my fav)

Enjoy your stay!

hi Localgirl00

welcome to TA forums

FYI it is a good idea to look at the OP (original post) to find out the date it was posted.

this one was posted in Aug 2014 so the poster is long gone.

hope this helps
