Bears in Prince Rupert Canada

I have an afternoon in Prince Rupert arriving at 2 15 and leaving early the next day. Is it possible to see the Grizzly bears in the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary in that time and how?

It is unlikely that you would have enough time to get to the Lodge, nor would their tour program fit that time frame. It takes a 30 min seaplane flight from Prince Rupert.

They have a day tour and a 4 day tour. Minimum number of participants seems to be required. I would email them though with your enquiry, see what they can do.

Sunset on Sept 15th is 8 pm.

The town dump in PR might be your best bet for bear viewing.

LOL - Mufti's not wrong. Town dump at sunset is a cheap and easy bear viewing tour.

You may not be able to get not the Khuzamateen, but you may find other trips that are more local. I read this week that the cruis industry is making more stops in PR, creating demand for more short-duration, local tours.

Not sure the dump is an option - it closes before 5 pm, and presumably, access is gated. (As is confirmed by this photo of the entry: https://goo.gl/maps/aNPGpBM9Kiw )

The concept of a dump where bears came in to feed on food is pretty much over except at illegal sites.

As birders; we check out the local landfill sites as the eagles show up during certain time of the year and even they have a narrow window to feed because once the trucks dump their load it is crushed and covered with dirt; + you no longer get to drive right up with your truck/car to the dumping area as in the old days; everything is now sorted near the entrance for non commercial loads.

Yup, Dumps are no longer the best place to see bears. All the "stuff" hauled in during the day is covered in earth before the gates clod at the dump. The reason for this is,,,,, because of the bears.

I remember as a teen going to the Open Air Mall ( local dump) and seeing up to 45 bears of all types, colours and sizes in the evenings.

But no more..,. 🐻

Ya to bad, wife just said if you had more time fly into Terrace, rent a car for the four hour drive to Stewart/ Hyder ( Alaska) view the bears in Hyder for next to nothing for money. Spend the night in Stewart drive back tto Rupert.

However your time is to short
