Driveability fromPhoenix

Curious how user friendly driving from Phoenix is and if US Rental Cars are allowed across border.

It's an easy drive. Mostly a two lane highway once you get off I-10. US rental cars are allowed south of the border as long as you purchase your Mexican insurance from the car rental agency and have all of your rental paperwork with you. You may be asked for them at the border when you return.

Mg - I have never stayed at Pricessa, but here is the link to TA reviews: http://tinyurl.com/jo738ze

Mark - I forgot to mention, the speed limits are ridiculously low around town, as soon as you cross the border into Mexico and they are strictly enforced. And they are in kilometer, not miles.

I would stay on Sandy Beach. Nicest place is Las Palomas. We also like Sonoran Sky if it's just the two of us (newest condos....more boutique type of feel). I like nice and new...more upscale places...which Sandy Beach has. I haven't been to the Princessa in forever, it is definitely older and in an older area. Depends what you are looking for, but I wouldn't feel ok staying there. But that's just my opinion. Sandy Beach has least 10-15 different condo developments on it and is a little more geared towards Americans.

Look on VRBO and in filters, search the different hotels on Sandy Beach. There is a map on Google that has them all listed. Good luck!

We will be at Las Palomas in June and July! Can't wait!!

side note..... don't speed through Ajo, Why, or Sonoyta (border town). Once you get about 10 miles outside of town you are fine until you get into RP.

and for a fun time and good food...Try Wrecked at the Reef on Sandy Beach. Sports bar ...lots of fun!!

The drive from Phx is very easy. It goes down to two lanes once you get to Gila Bend. Watch the speed limits through Ajo and from there to Sonoyta (I always see police on that section -- easy to speed out there in the middle of nowhere). Also watch your speed in Sonoyta. I was warned by RP locals about the police there and that they are looking for the mordida. Which you should avoid & head to the judge.

Rental cars are allowed across the border. If you drive from the US to Mexico in a rental, you have the option of purchasing the Mexican insurance outside the rental company. You want to be sure you use A-rated insurers and keep a copy of the policy with you if you have an accident.

Which Companies allow this, I have called a few like Avis and Budget, and they say they do not allow it.

I spoke to someone in Rocky Point last weekend and they said that Alamo allows you to take rentals across the border. I believe they said they rented at the PHX airport. They did say that they originally had an SUV reserved, but then were told they couldn't take an SUV to Mexico, so they got a van instead.

Car rental companies do not allow their cars across the border unless they are rented for that purpose. If you do rent a car without telling them you are going to Mexico, your contract is voided, and the insurance may not be valid. Insurance is included with a rental to be used in Mexico. Check with Hertz and Enterprise.
