Hi Peter;
As a citizen of Australia, you do NOT require a Visa to visit Canada, but you will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
ONLY use the official Government of Canada website.
Apply for an eTA as early as possible. Most are issued in a short period of time, while some others can take 2-3 MONTHS...sometimes longer.
Wait to make any non-refundable purchases (flights, accommodations, etc) until *after* your eTA has been approved.
The eTA is NOT a Visa. It is only authorization to board a plane to Canada.
Without a valid eTA, you WILL be denied boarding by the airline.
Your eTA will remain valid for a period of 5 years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
For the US, you will need a similar item - an American ESTA.

Thanks very much. Some of the info on this question is confusing but now I am clear.
Thanks PB
You're Welcome !
Make sure that you only use the official Government sites as there are some third party sites that will rip you off big time.
Canada $7 https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/eta.html?utm_source=slash-eta_ave&utm_medium=short-url-en&utm_campaign=eta
USA $14 https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/
Thanks for that too. I see some sites charge $100. What a rip off.
Thanks
You would be surprised how many people do not see "Ad" in front of the first Google search results and pay that sort of money. The same sorts of rip-off sites exist for Aust ETA/visa too.
Wish I saw this before We got ripped off. AUD $101 each instead of $7.00. We don't go until 5 August. Is there anything I can do? The site I used came up as The Offical Canada Visa site. Misrepresentation big time. I saw that it was CAD $5.50 Did not know what we paid until I looked up credit card statement.. I did USA direct for $14 each and even commented to husband that Canada was cheaper and quicker. What a rip off. No invoice issued. We are away from home at moment but will enquire when we get home. Another lesson learned.

Instead, you will fill out an I-94W, be fingerprinted, photographed and pay US$14. Good for 2 years or until your pp expires, whichever comes first. The I-94W will be electronically attached to your passport and when you disembark again in Vancouver, the US will know that you have left the US and entered Canada through Canada Customs and Immi at the port.

Yes and cunning.
