Boca del Rio

I'm going back to Veracruz soon for work and looking for a little advice about where to go in the evenings. I've been a couple times for previous projects, but this time I am traveling with a colleague who is a little nervous about traveling in Mexico. This isn't helped by our nervous-nelly risk manager who says stuff like "I wouldn't set foot in Mexico if you paid me..." blah blah blah. Argh. I want my colleague to have a fun time, relax a bit, and I don't want to be holed up at the hotel the whole time. We only have evenings free, so basically go out for dinner, a drink, maybe a little wandering around.

So, I am thinking about taking my colleague over to the area of Boca del Rio by the Rio Jamapa one night. I haven't been down there yet, but it looks like a pretty chill area with several restaurants with views, some shops, the zocalo. What do you guys think? We'll be staying by Plaza las Americas and Plaza del Sol, so it would be a relatively short taxi ride over there.

Another night, I am thinking about going to Villa Rica Mocombo - I think he would enjoy the giant palapa and eating next to the beach. Then of course there are the restaurants right around the area where we'll be staying - at the Plaza del Sol, etc.

Both great choices.

In boca del rio (by the river) you'll have a number of options for restaurants. I recommend Terraza Boca or La Luna Sul Mare. Overall that is a really fun area to spend some time.

If you're here over a weekend then you may want to consider going to El Candelabro. It's an adult bar with live music. The music is usually by performers, people who are professional musicians, not kids playing covers.

You may also want to try eating at Azafran. The upstairs is a really nice restaurant and downstairs is a bar/lounge area. So you can have a nice quiet dinner upstairs and then go downstairs for some drinks and fun.

Ya know, you're becoming a bit of a regular down here.

Enjoy!!

Personally, I was underwhelmed by Boca del Rio - a collection of mediocre but expensive restaurants by the boat launch and tours up the river - it's OK, not great.

You might take your friend to one of the little open air fish restaurants over by the aquarium. The food is good, but expensive. The nice thing is the atmosphere - sipping a cold one at a table in the sand while Veracruzano trios serenade on harps and guitars.

Of course there's always something happening at the main plaza, Plaza del Constitucion - usually some dance groups on stage, or local salsa band playing in the street. Wednesday night used to be Danzon with the municipal orchestra playing while well-dressed couples waltz to the formal and complicated Danzon steps, but don't know if they still do that.

Thanks for the recommendations. Yes, I am getting to know Veracruz a little bit these days. We had a project that started in 2013, and I went down a couple times for that. Now we have another project starting now that will last about 18 months. I'm sure I'll end up going down there at least a couple times during the course of this project.

The restaurants by the aquarium - are those the ones along Blvd Avila Camacho, on the ocean side of the street with the palapa roofs? I saw those last time on the way to the zocalo, and they looked promising. Any specific recommendations?

Yes, those are the ones. No specific recommendations, we just pick one that has people eating in it.

Don't go to what's considered the heart of Boca del Rio, the older town section, and expect to find fish caught locally served in restaurants there. The waters are polluted in that area and the fish prepared and eaten comes from slightly further down the coast ... from the fishing port of Alvarado (which is well worth a visit for an off-the-beaten-path trip, IMO). Though going for a meal in BDR was once popular, I think it's "time" has passed. I enjoy Veracruz, warts and all!

Thanks for the recommendations. I go in a couple weeks - getting the dates for the meetings has been like trying to nail jello to a wall :-)

Depends on what you consider 'fun'. For many, the zocalo in old town Veracruz is the place to be, self included. Hard to beat Gran Hotel Diligencias right on the zocalo for under $50 US.

Again, it all depends on what interests you. Boca would be a good contrast to centro, and something obviously interested you to check it out in the first place.
