Is Tijuana safe?

I've been warned about kidnappings of young women there - I have two beautiful 17 year-olds.

You find more info on google than here. Crime happens everywhere if they don't do drugs nothing will happen is the common answers. Not sure if thats ture in this case but try to look up info , yahoo would work also. Why not send them to Cancun.

kidnapping of young women??? that's a first. I think you got Juarez and TJ mixed up. Though TJ is not safe IMO for just about anyone. Problems from police, problems from local drug lords, problems from regular criminals, proplems from drunken tourists who think that they can do anything in Mexico.

TJ is a dump IMO. Go so where else. Anywhere south of Cabo is much better :).

Tijuana is just like any other place. If you get involved with the wrong crowd you'll have problems. I lived there for a few years and I had a great experience and many friends.

Tijuana is no less safe than any big city. I've been visiting for nine years, since moving to California, and the worst I've dealt with are the occasional greedy waiter trying to overcharge me, and a couple of overzealous policemen trying to intimidate me into a shakedown. I've also taken women there (including my mother & grandmother) and never had any indication of trouble.

The vast majority of actual violent crime that goes on in Tijuana is related in one way or another to the drug trade -- either people dealing, trying to buy, attacking drug gangs (police) or writing about the drug gangs (journalists). Stay away from doing any of that, and stay out of seedy areas of town, and chances are you'll be just fine.

During our recent Las Vegas-Southern California trip, we went to Tijuana for the day. It was fun, different , and we felt safe. We paid $8.00 for the bus from San Diego. It takes you to Reveloution Blvd., which is a commercial/touristy street. Although we were repeatedly asked to "buy here", "buy here" from about 100 different shops (selling almost identical stuff), we enjoyed the experience and felt very safe.

Two Things:

1. We did not stray away from the "tourist/commercial" area.

2. I cannot comment about what it would be like to stay there overnight in a local hotel.

I just got back from Tijuana last night. I'm a 29 yr guy, traveling on my own. It was pretty crazy, I wouldn't recommend two young teenagers especially if they are going alone. Why not drive 40 minutes south to Rosarito, it's a very nice little beach town...there's a lot for 17 year olds to do there (bars, clubs, beaches, malls, shopping ect)

I know a few people say: Don't do drugs and you'll be ok. But that's not necessarly true. I've been to many 3rd world countries and I always keep an open mind and give people the benefit of the doubt. But honestly I would tell them to be extremely careful if they decide to go...

Just go to Rosarito...

Good for you Surfer 201

I want to thank you- yes keep them away from TIJUANA.

Rosarito Beach- very tame- that is a good suggestion.

Glad to see you are away from the suggestion of any visits to ave revolucion in Tijuana. You are saving lives with this.

Tourism is a major industry in TJ. The chances of being kidnapped are miniscule. The violence and kidnappings of TJ are related to the drug cartels. Of course, as tourists, and being beautiful and 17, you will encounter some over-zealous salespeople and hawkers, approaching you, inviting you into their shops, competing for your attention. TJ can be an eye-burning, headache-provoking, noisy place...but it can also be fun. Have a Ceasar's Salad at the Ceasar's Hotel where it was actually invented. Pop into the the Hard Rock, look at the memorabilia on the walls, have a drink and a burger. Listen to some sidewalk bands and give them a tip. While you might be hassled and whistled at, don't be paranoid about kidnappings. ANd maybe pay the few bucks to bus down to Rosarita Beach, about a half hour away. The old hotel there is nice, the beach is OK. While TJ is definitely a gritty, forboding place in some ways, so is New Orleans, Detroit, and Baltimore, but you can have a nice time if you play it safe and use your common sense.
