Would like to know the best place to get fresh fruit and produce? Should we just get it at the grocery store, or are there roadside stands/markets that would have a better selection?

We will be going in 2 weeks and have a full kitchen and car, so that's not a problem.

Thanks seashell. Do you know if they grow anything locally on Grand Bahama island?

There is a Farmers Market downtown on West Mall Drive.

The last Saturday of each month there is "Da Market" at the Rand Nature Center.

Freetown Farm is located in Freetown about 30 minutes from Lucaya, they have organic produce, eggs, etc locally grown onsite.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Just back from Bahamas and had a wonderful time!

We went to Solomon's many times and found the fruit and vegetable selection absolutely horrible. No bananas, no kiwi, no strawberries, blueberries, etc. Nice to be back where there are plenty. Don't think fruits and vegetables are eaten that much there judging from the restaurants offerings, and VERY expensive.

It's not strawberry season right now. In the spring, we've found strawberries in the Grend Bahama grocery stores for prices comparable to Florida. I would have expected to find banana, mango, papaya, cantalope and watermelon, but I would not expect to find kiwis (not a common fruit) or blueberries (not in season). Last week we bought an English cucumber grown in Lucaya at Maxwells in the Abacos for the same price we would pay for one at Publix in Florida. Apples are similar in price to Florida where apples are much more expensive (and not as good) as they are in the northern areas of the US where apples are grown For the most part, the fruits and vegetables in the grocery stores in the Bahamas are expensive, and are not very good quality. Part of the quality problem could be that no one is buying them at the price they charge, and they sit until they go bad. There are some farms here and there, but their produce is usually bought up pretty quickly by local residents and restaurants. For anyone cooking at a vacation home, the frozen vegetables are the same quality and close to the same price as the US.
