How windy before water too rough?

I’m arriving in Nassau May 18 through the 22. The weather forecast says “windy” on two of the days (20 mph).

The hotel mentioned it may sometimes cancel certain water activities for the day in high winds, if the water is “too rough”. In your experience, are 20 mph winds enough to make water so rough that water sports like speedboat, jet ski, and kayaking become unmanageable or dangerous?

Depends on where your staying. If Paradise Island, which has a northern facing beach, and the wind is out of the north, it can be rough with rip currents and undertows. If the wind is calm or out of the south, not a problem. Cable Beach has an offshore reef, so it is generally calm, despite any wind. Excursions will get cancelled if the seas are too rough, or if there is threat of bad weather. Keep in mind that the jet ski vendors, are not part of any resort, not insured, and a bit shady...so you do so at your own risk. Too many serious accidents and deaths over the years. Even the US Embassy forbids it's staff from partaking in these activities, and has issued many warnings to visitors over the years.

Wow, good to know about the jet skis! Had no idea. We’ll stick to the resort activities then. The wind is supposed to be a SE wind. We’ll be at Sandals, which is on the north side of the island, but it is Cable Beach, so maybe it’ll be okay.

If so, you'll be fine. Of course any nearby thunderstorms can make the ocean rough for a time.
