Flights to St.Kitts/Nevis

We are thinking of staying at the Four Seasons on Nevis but trying to get a flight intinerary that we like isn't easy...I see a non stop flight from JFK/NYC...but flights back are not as nice.

Can anyone tell me what airline they chose and how they liked the flight intineraries? If we flew into St. Thomas, does anyone know how long of a ferry trip it would be to Nevis?

Thanks!

There is no ferry from St. Thomas. St. Thomas is quite far away from Nevis. Perhaps you meant St. Kitts? The public ferry is about 45 minutes from St. Kitts to Nevis, but the Four Seasons has its own shuttle service for guests. It's pricey but probably worth it.

We fly from Boston to San Juan on AA, then on to Nevis on American Eagle. We go in high season--depending on when you're traveling the frequency of flights may be different.

I'd either fly from NY non-stop to St. Kitts (2 flights a week on AA?) then ferry over to Nevis; or fly to San Juan, and change planes for the flight to Nevis.

Ting is right, don't try connecting through St. Thomas - to paraphase the old saying "you can't get to Nevis from there". There's no ferry (much too far and too much "open water") and no direct flights between St. Thomas and Nevis. It will take you longer to get between those islands than it would to go from NY area airports to Nevis.

From the NYC/NJ airports your options are:

1) Fly non-stop from JFK to St Kitts (on Wednesdays or Sundays and take the ferry or Four Seasons launch to Nevis).

2) Fly into San Juan and catch an American Eagle flight to Nevis. FYI - you can also take American Eagle to St. Kitts and take the ferry to Nevis (as described in #1 above).

3) Fly into St. Martin and catch a Winair (www.fly-winair.com) flight to Nevis.

4) Fly into Antigua (not sure if you can get a non-stop or direct flight to Antigua from NY airports) and take Winair to Nevis.

Really, your best options are either 1 or 2. Nevis isn't always easy to get to but it's worth the trip.

American Airlines, Delta & US Airways are the only airlines that fly to SKB/NEV from the US.

I've flown USAir once and American Airlines three times.

On USAir my itinerary was MCI/CLT/SXM/SKB. Personally, I will avoid SXM airport on all future trips, unless flying to SXM for holiday.

On AA my itinerary was MCI/DFW/SJU/NEV.

Both flights were pleasant and most importantly, with all those connections, no lost luggage!

Enjoy your trip and safe travels!

The AA non-stop from JFK to St Kitts (on Wednesdays or Sundays and take the ferry or Four Seasons launch to Nevis) is the easiest and quickest. Lately we have been taking a EWR-SXM direct flight on Continental and then Win Air to NEV. It gets us into Nevis by 3PM and like it much better than USAir. The trip from Woodbury to Newark takes only about 10-15 more minutes that it takes to get to JFK and there is much less traffic. You can check on bus/limo service at Woodbury Travel which is located behind Maggie McFlys.

Any thoughts on an itinerary from Chicago? It appears you can fly into Nevis with one connection in San Juan on the way over, but you need two on the way back, or one connection in Charlottee going to St. Kitts each way.

Also, we're thinking of going in the high season (August) and flights look really expensive right now (around 700 per person). Any change these prices will drop, or should we just buy now?

August is low season in Nevis, and you'll find that some places will be closed. August-September are the middle of hurricane season in the Caribbean.

I'd wait a bit to buy tickets. We paid just over $500 from Boston in February. This was the lowest price we've paid in years. $700 though, is probably about average lately, and what we've paid in years past.

You need to look at American Airlines. They own the Caribbean. You will be flying into St. Kitts (SKB) not Nevis(NEV). There are five flight choices out of JFK with one change of plane in either Miami (2 choices) or San Juan (3 choices). Returning you have 2 thru MIA and 2 thru SJU. If you book the flight that gets you into SKB at 8:45pm you will HAVE to take the 4S launch. The ferries don't run that late. The launch includes meeting at the airport and assistance through customs, check-in at the airport, taxi and luggage transfer to the dock (you won't see your luggage until a few minutes after you arrive at your room at the hotel) and a 1/2 hour ride across the channel in one of their speed boats or, if your in a big group, a double hull cabin cruiser. Rum punches and iced towel service. You land at the 4S private dock and are personally taken to your room. If you take the local ferry you land downtown Charlestown and have to get to the resort yourself. If you're staying at the 4S your paying first class price so you should not try to save a few $ and cause yourself extra angst. The same works getting back: the bellman picks up your luggage and you go to the great house to assemble; you go across on the launch and they taxi you to the airport where your luggage is brought up to the check in for you. They also arrange for your exit taxes in advance.

Operaisfun - fly into St. Kitts - not Nevis There is one American Airlines flight thru Miami and one thru San Juan daily. I don't suggest the flight thru MIA because the connection time is so short. (40 min). The connection time in SJU is 6 hours but you can leave the airport and go to the Ritz or El San Juan Hotel/Casinos and relax for a couple of hours. Taxi fares are by zone and the hotels are an $8.00 taxi ride away. The same time constraints apply to returning. Beware of the flt2280/flt1425 connection as it only gives you 15 minutes to clear customs: not possible. They shouldn't even offer it!

Shallow shoals and Ting, thank you so much! SS, you should be a local expert! I appreciate the well-thought-out and detailed advice, which you can't really find anywhere else but from someone who is a local or has been there a million times.
