Just got back from my honeymoon on Sat. We spent the first 3 nights at Caneel Bay and the last 4 nights at Peter Island. We had been to St John twice before this trip so we knew what we were getting. We spent the majority of our time away from Caneel Bay because we wanted to do what we like so much about St John - going to Cruz Bay, renting a moped for a ride to Skinny Legs stopping at beaches along the way, and renting a dinghy to snorkel whereever we wanted. No disappointment with Caneel Bay, but for the second half of our trip where we wanted a less hurried pace, Peter Island was perfect and we will definitely return some day. Peter Island is much more intimate (the only development on the island is the resort itself) and romantic. We also thought the food was very good. We never ate at Tradewinds for dinner. We enjoyed the Bar & Grill beachside so much we ate there every night. We stayed in one of the Beachfront Suites and it was definitely worth the add'l price. The beach and snorkeling were right outside our door. We also took the Thursday snorkeling trip to Virgin Gorda. Definitely recommend this and if you have the energy to make it up the hills, the bike ride around Peter Island was awesome too. I don't want to turn you away from Caneel Bay but if I had to choose, Peter Island wins easily. But include at least a day in St John if you can.
