Snorkelling near Coco Palm

We will be staying in Coco Palm for two weeks in April 2011 and would like to do some snorkelling if we can.

If the snorkelling is good in this area we may like to bring my own mask etc. Otherwise we may have to rent from the shops.

Any comment and suggestion will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,

2 beaches nearby with moderate snorkelling are Pigeon Island and Smugglers Cove(which is the beach next to the Cap Maison Hotel)

If you want better you need to go to the south of the island

Bring your snorkelling gear, you can easily get to Pigeon Island to snorkel. The snorkelling is best from Anse Cochon (just south of marigot) downwards, and its easy to get yourself on a tour which includes snorkelling, or to even take the bus down to Soufriere and snorkel off the beaches.

Hi,

I am afraid that the busses do not run that far north so you will either need to take a taxi all the way or a bus part of the way and then walk/taxi the remainder.

The nearest is Pigeon island which is about USD 15 each way in a taxi. At it costs USD 5 each to get into the park. In the park there are 3 beaches, a small museum, a very good local cafe/restaurant, an English pub and some hiking trails etc.

By bus you could get that from the highway (near CP) to the Gros Islet junction, which is as far as they go, and then walk(25 mins guess) or taxi the rest. The staff at CP will give you more detailed directions. The busses don't have numbers they are "public" minibusses, perfectly ok to use once you get to know how.

Smugglers is a further 25 mins walk from where you would turn off for Pigeon Island

To get to Soufriere by bus you have a 3 leg journey.

1) CP/Rodney Bay to Castries

2) Castries to Soufriere

3) Soufriere to the Beach.

Not easy but if you are determined it could be done. But you are looking at 2+ hours each way. I would recommend you consider an organised trip or a taxi all of the way. Perhaps you could pal up with people at CP and split the cost of a taxi

Thanks, we are here at Coco Palm already. Beeche is lovely and we have snorkelled a bit but have not seen much fish.

We will hire a car for a couple of days to go to the south etc and also to Pigeon Island. Should we search the internet for hire car ??

Ah, a tip about exchange rate, we paid GBP in GL Supermarket which gave 4.15/£. This morning we went across the road to another supermarket which only gave 3.8/£. Our hotel gave 3.20 and the bank's rate is £4.18. No guessing where we will shop at in the next few days.

What a wonderful island !!

I just read your post and realize you are already there. If you haven't booked anything as of yet we were there last July and really wanted to find snorkelling. It was suggested to call Anse Chastnet directly. I called and the rest was absolutly wonderful. They picked us up by taxi from Coconut Bay which is very far south, they boat taxied us to their private beach, fed us lunch and we had the most beautiful snorkeling event ever. So many fish you could not see through them. Really worth the call. Good luck.

Thanks everyone who has helped us with our questions.

We went to Pigeon Island from Rodney Bay this morning: the hotel receptionist said it would cost us USD$12 each way which is about EC$60. As we went to Castries by local buses on Saturday and enjoyed the experience so much, we decided to have a go of using the local buses again.

We walked to the main road, just outside the supermarket and waited at the bus shelter. 30 seconds later we were on the bus to Gros Islet Junction which would have cost us EC$3 for two people. Johnston, the bus driver, kindly took us to the gate of Pigeon Island for an extra of EC$10. Thank you Johnston.

The weather was not too good but we walked up to the fort, had a wonderful meal at the resturant and then snorkelled.

On the way home we were looking for a local taxi to take us back to Gros Islet to catch the bus. The taxi driver by the stalls near the National Park gate said it will be USD$10. When we said that would be too much, she said then the only way to get back to Gros Islet is to walk !!!

So we walked.

After 1 minute or so walking, we asked a minibus driver about the transportation to Gros Islet. He talked to his passenagers and they said just popped in we will give you a lift to Gros Islet. They actually dropped us off in Rodney Bay and continued their journey down south. Thank you very much for the lift.

Now what about that - a journey for both way for EC$13. Most locals are nice and friendly, so don't get upset by the others who may be not as nice.

If you have a chance, try the local buses, they are great and what an experience you will have.
