Yes, it was in Cabarete. This place has a very false fecade. It is sold to unassuming tourists by the money hungry scum of this world; or should I say underworld, ie hotel, bar, restaurant, business owners based in DR.
The individual in question, one Alan Reed from London, has absolutely no recollection of the events. His girlfriend left him at the beach to walk a friend to a taxi at the main street. Meanwhile Alan who was on the beach was most likely drugged, as is very common in Dominican Republic (don't listen to any lies that tell otherwise). He awoke inside his hotel with what appeared to be an attempt to cut off his testicles and penis; absolutely horrific!! No motive known as yet, and only 2 arrested.
He is in a stable condition, and doctors have managed to sew his left testicle back in place and have reported there will be no long term damage.
This is not an isolated incident in the DR. There were 3 rapes in 2 months on Europeans on Cabarete beach by young gun carrying Dominicans who are in league with the corrupt police force. A white European tourist was battered over the head with the butt of a gun for intervening on young Dominican men harassing a very drunk young Canadian woman. The gun was then cocked, and lucky for the tourist it was extremely busy on Cabarete beach; he managed to duck through the crowd and escape being shot.. All of this in full view of other tourists. Over 60 stitches were required. The hospital involved the police, who then had to act (but normally only do so with a monatory bribe). Those involved were informed of the police involvement; found the hotel where the victim was staying and informed the hotel staff that unless the statement was revoked, he would be shot dead.
This is the tip of the iceberg, I have knowlegde of far worse, having been drugged and robbed myself. Not to mention witnessing a bloody death there. People involved in incidents like this are often scared to speak out, especially the young woman who have been raped. The Polish girl who was raped, was the only one who made it known out of the three to the local police, but they did not act.
Don not believe what Trip Advisor say about Dominican Republic, it is mostly falsehood written by those in the tourism industry with a vested interest in Dominican Republic; property renters, hotel, bar, restaurant and business owners.
Please don't believe the hype. There are far safer places in the Caribbean; spend more money, be safe, boycott DR.
