Waves in DR?

How would you describe the water in DR - actual waves that you can ride/boogie board or more like a lake? Which beach is the best one for calm water?

The DR is a rather large part of the island if Hispsnola. It covers more than 18,000 sq miles. The North Coast has large waves where surfing and kiteboarding happen. The east coast can range from surfing size waves at Macao Beach to More calm waters. It is the Atlantic Ocean on the north and east coasts.

On the south coast is the Caribbean Ocean, and calmer clearer waters.

Waves but not to ride a boogie board. Punta Cana water is nice but found La Romana water calmer.
