Glow Worms

A Glow worm safari has been on my bucket list for quiet a long time.

luckily we are coming to Bermuda October 26th - when the conditions are just right for it.

I saw Ana Luna does a safari on those dates but was curious if it was possible to do on our own?

As they want 80$ per adult and $70 for my 2 year old.

Thank you

A popular spot to see the GLOW WORM is out along the north-eastern shore, at the Cut between the FERRY REACH Inlet and the ocean...from the eastern end of CONEY ISLAND (Map Grid--N-3)...but this spot may be difficult to access in the evening for most visitors on their own.

Probably easier to access (especially if you will be arriving by cruise ship)...you may also see Glow Worms from the docks along the sores of MANGROVE BAY at Cambridge Beaches Dock and the PUBLIC WHARF at the seaward-end of Cambridge Road (Map Grid--B-8)

I found some pretty helpful information.

The BUEI does do them still and they sent me a list of dates. However; only children 10 and up can participate. It is $50 and you can still bring on your own snacks and non-alcoholic drinks.

Looks like we are going with the Ana Luna Option since my toddler can join us. And so we don't have to scout them out on our own.

Thank you!!

1) A great place to watch this magical show is from the bridge at Ferry Reach Park near the Whalebone Bay in St. George's parish, or at the Flatts Inlet. You can also sometimes see it at the Hamilton Harbor.

2) Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) and Bermuda Zoological Society both organize Glow Worm Cruises during the season so that you can go to the area and watch it from a close distance. For BUEI the rates are $50 per person ($40 if you are a member of the Institute). You can carry your snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. There is a cash bar on the boat. The time of cruise departure varies depending on the time of sunset. The spectacular display starts exactly 56 minutes after the sunset. The cruise leaves from the BUEI's own dock and goes to a calm area on the sea. You can call BUEI at 441/294-0204 or 292-7219 to get more information about booking the cruise tours.

3) If you are docked at a cruise ship pier in Royal Naval Dockyard, a good option is to take bus #7 or 8 and get off at the bus stop for Mangrove Bay Post Office in Somerset (about 10 minutes). Walk along Mangrove Bay Road (you will see the post office on your left). Walk for about 300 meters and you will reach a 'T' junction where the road ends and meets Cambridge Road. Turn right and go up to the end (100 meters) and you will reach a concrete pier overlooking the bay. Sit here and wait for the time when the glow worms begin their show... you may not be always lucky though.

4) The outfitter Ana Luna Adventures offers a 3-hour boating tour on their catamaran to watch the glow warm mating dance. The boat leaves from the pier of Grotto Bay Beach Resort located at Hamilton Parish just before the Causeway as you drive towards east. You should book the tour in advance and they sail subject to minimum number of persons on board. The boat departs one hour before the sunset.

The glow worms are visible at Ferry Reach Park bridge and other sights on land. However, you would need transportation to get into Ferry Reach

The nearest spot to observe the Glow Worms at the Ferry Reach Cut will be from CONEY ISLAND on the western-side of the Cut. It will be an approx. ½--¾ mile walk in along the Bermuda RailwayTrail, from the North Shore Road and the #10 & #11 public bus routes.

It will be approx. 1½ mile walk in to the Cut at Ferry Reach Park from the eastern/Saint George's direction and the #10 & #11 bus route stop along Mullet Bay Road..

Hello Carley J,

In addition to the suggestions you have already received, you can also reach out to Island Tour Centre www.islandtourcentre.com and the Bermuda Zoological Society www.bamz.org/events/glow-worm-cruises-2 as they both offer Glow Worm cruises and may have something that you will be interested in

For anyone who wants to know more about Bermuda Fire Worms (Glow Worms) than they really need to...try this recent scientific study for a little light reading--

"...The transcriptome of the Bermuda fireworm Odontosyllis enopla (Annelida: Syllidae): A unique luciferase gene family and putative epitoky-related genes.."

Are glow worms the same as what we call fireflies in Canada?
