Itinerary help please

Hello. We will be on a cross country road trip in July going from CA to NY and will be stopping to hike Shenandoah with 3 kids. I am totally unfamiliar with the park and surrounding areas. Please help to guide where is it better to lodge (inside the park or is there a close by community where people usually stay)? I am currently looking at Skyland and Big Meadows Lodge, but if we pick one or the other, how far are we from food options? We wanted to do a few easy hikes 2-5 miles each; can you recommend some? How far are the caverns and do you recommend those with kids?

Thank you so much!

Hi BerJulia,

Love Big Meadows Lodge, excellent restaurant, the Lodge location is close to Byrd Visitor Center & Exhibits.

I have dined with the children at Big Meadows and Skylands, food and prices similar.. We prefeedr the Lodge.

Have also stayed in Luray at the Cardinal Inn and it was fine. A number of years ago stayed at the Hillside motel and that was also fine.

I have stayed at and also recommend Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria.

IMHO I would not bother with the caverns as there is more than enough in the National Park and the Shenandoah River State Park.

Like Kesh_grammy, we like Big Meadow Lodge and always tried to stay there with our kids. The central location is good—the Byrd Visitor Center is right there. The dining room is excellent, but you can also get food at the Wayside Cafe. The Great Room is a good place to hang out with kids—there’s kid-sized furniture and games and puzzles.

One of our favorite hikes with our kids was the Rose River Loop. At just under 4 miles, it’s a good length and there’s lots of water which is always popular with kids. For a good description of this hike, see:

Thank you so much for your thorough feedback. Which entrance are we going to use when coming from Tennessee? So, from your experience, since you stayed at a variety of lodges, is it worth staying in the park vs surroundings? I am just concerned for food options, I know Big Meadows has a restaurant but it might hit our budget to eat there 3 meals a day for 3 days for 5 people..

Julia,

Have traveled for years when the children were young and now the grandchildren with packets of instant oatmeal, cereal bars, fruit cups, P and J, milk and juice cartons, homemade trail mix, purchasing bread and fruit in towns along the way, (I avoid any shops in a Park or just outside as the prices are high). We use refillable bottles for water as well. When we stayed at Cardinal Inn we had a microwave and small fridge which made it perfect to save money.

There is a Kroger and Food Lion in Waynesboro also a Sharp Shopper Grocery Outlet,

Tenn? Perhaps coming in 64 > Rockfish Gap/ Waynesboro entrance
