Mammoth cave tours

We are planning a trip to Mammoth Cave National Park this March. We have 3 kids (ages 11, 10, and almost 6). I'd love advice about which tours would be best for our family.

We did the Historic and New Entrance Tours. Keep in mind that tour routes can overlap, so doublecheck before you sign up. For descriptions of tours, visit nps.gov and go to the Mammoth Cave section of the website. Advance tour reservations can be made at recreation.gov.

The Historic Tour lasts about 2 hours and as indicated by its namesake, it tells the story of the history behind the cave. The New Entrance Tour takes you into the drapery room where you can see the few formations the cave actually has. To see these formations, you will need to do a tour that includes this area of the cave. The Frozen Niagara tour is shorter than the New Entrance and merely shows visitors the formations. It's good to do if you're short on time.

For those who are quite energetic, the Grand Avenue Tour may be a winner. It's about 4 miles in length and lasts about 4 hours. It's the longest tour that does not require "spelunking."

We took the Great Onyx Lantern Tour. Lasted 2h15m and was fun with the torches. Good guide. But I must say we have seen more spectacular caves at other places like Carlsbad Caverns and Wind Cave.

Agreed, Tet! Although we love all caves, it was awesome to see all the boxwork at Wind Cave. Jewel is even better, just in case you haven't been and ever return to South Dakota.

The size of Mammoth Cave is really mind boggling. The rooms are just massive.

Carlsbad is on our bucket list.. We have to get there someday soon!!
