Stay at the beach or at the Salt Lake Apartments?

Usually stay at a beach place, however I do like the stillness and odd beauty of salt flats.

So have been looking at Salt Lake Apartments and am thinking it may be a better option when staying in Alykes and also a little different. Plus it looks like less than a ten min walk to the beach.

Tried to walk it on google maps but the little google car did not drive on the road at the top end of the lake! ;)

Anyone stayed here or nearby?

The rear of the salt flats are only a 5 mins walk max from the beach, lots of apartment choices all around them.

I am staying at Pothos Studios for the first time at end of month & realy looking forward to it. Far enough away from the hussle & bussle but close enough to have a great choice of Beach, Taverna's, other bars & restaurants. Stayed in Alykes before & loved it but not here so looking forward to stay. I think there is a better vidio trip around Alykes on Facebook that goes past the back of salt flats but I'm sure Mondeo may be able to advise better then me

Apoligised to you & Mondeo it was not facebook but Youtube ( I do get mixed up with all these sites ) If you go onto youtube Zakynthos then find Alykes Tour it gives you a very good tour around Alykes & at the back of Salt Flats. I hope this helps & as said looking forward to my trip. :-)

Many thanks MONDEO1 and Joe - very helpful.

As you are both so knowledgeable on the area - wondering which beach bars/restaurants in this specific area you would recommend? As in 15 minutes walk from the salt flats.

I am by no means a expert on the area, Mondeo yes but not me. I went to Alykanas begining of last year & enjoyed it & tried to get back Sept but fully booked so ended up in Alykes & if anything I enjoyed it more so returning this year to Alykes now trying Pothos by the salt flats. I found that most of the restaurants were good but 3 that came to mind that I particually enoyed were Ponderosa, Fidelio. I was staying at Avra Studios & close by was To Koukounari Taverna, it will be a little way out from the salt flats maybe 30-40min walk but I plan to try & get there the once on my next visit, I did enjoy their Pork meals. I will be trying a few more that may be closer to Salt Flats this year. I will try to make notes on them & report back to you on my return. When are hopeing to go there.

Just across the salt flats, close to the beach, Paulos Corner is very good and quite cheap. It is used by the locals. On the beach, albeit at the Alykanas end, Paporro has been getting very good reviews this year although I have never been. Others on the beach that I have tried and found to be good are Palm Tree II and Porto Paradiso.

For evening meals I can also recommend Fidelios, El Greco, Picadilly and Al Fresco. On the way out of the village towards Alykanas, To Paradosiako is very good, a little more up-market than the rest, then a little further on by the road bridge over the river is our favourite for this year, Potami.

There are many more both on the beach and around the village, I'm sure you will find your own favourites.

Stayed at the Akis which I believe is just behind Salt apartments , if these are the ones they look brand new , but don't think they have a pool , mind you as long you buy the odd drink from the bar none of the hotels near it would mind you using theirs

We stayed in Alykes recently, at the Beach house which was lovely. In a quiet rural location right on the beach. Just a ten minute walk into the village.

I do not know if you have already booked the salt lake apartments yet. But when we were there we met two couple who complained about the many mosquitos that were in the area. One man had been bitten very badly. They also complained of the smell of sulphur that hung around the area, and the many overflowing bins that attracted rats.

Bear this in mind when booking. One lady who regretted staying in that area also complained of the rats and overflowing bins, she said she regretted choosing that area, she stayed at Maria's apartments and felt it was a long walk back at night if she had been out for the evening.

Hopefully you will have a better experience at the Salt Lake Apartments.

Out favourite tavernas were Relax which has lovely service, good food at a reasonable price. We also like Nostas which is a very popular restaurant specialising in traditional Greek food. Great value also. Al Fresco is on a 1st floor with views of the street.

We loved the little train trip which takes you on a scenic trip up to the mountains where you stop off at a museum, visit the local church and meet a lovely taverna owner who invited us to sample his home grown wine and raisins no charge. Chickens and cats squabbles for scraps .

We ordered a dish of cheese pies with salad. I have never seen a cat devour a piece of cucumber before unlike our spoiled cats who would turn their nose up at anything less than Purina. These cats fought with the chickens for pieces of carrot cucumber or anything that was thrown their way, I recommend this enjoyable day out. You get to see the real traditional life in Zante.

Zante has really managed to retain the traditional way of life and the nature is stunning. People who rented apartments in the mountains loved it and would not stay anywhere else. We did like having close access to the beach.

I hope you enjoy your holiday as much as we did. Do bring mosquito repellent if you are staying close to the salt lakes.

In our opinion the salt flats spoil the area in Alykes. We stayed at the Clio Hotel a few years ago. The hotel was lovely but wouldn't return because of this. Lots of flies around too.
