Minneapolis to NYC Sept 2012

Im heading out to Chicago in late September from NY. Going to take Rt 80 out, and then maybe visit some friends in Minneapolis after Chicago. Im looking to take a different route home....possibly head north, through southern Canada, and back into NY at Niagara Falls. Any recommendations on sights, attractions, routes, if its a good idea?

How much time are you allowing for this trip? Is this a solo trip? What are your interests? Are you going to emphasize Leaf Turn?

Suggest you read through this forum for at least the last three to six months. There aren't that many threads dealing with your proposed itinerary.

Consider Cleveland, Ohio Amish Country, Cedar Point, The Henry Ford, upper Michigan and the Mackinac Bridge back to Detroit in order to cross into Canada at Windsor.

I'm not certain what there is to see in southern Ontario north of Lake Erie compared to northern Ohio, but it should be a quicker route to Niagara Falls from upper Michigan.

Taking The Great Northern US2 back from Minnesota might be a good idea.

We generally go through northern Michigan at least one way when we head east from Minnesota. Much more scenic and interesting than the southern route, and you avoid the hassle of going through Chicago again. From Minneapolis go up I35 about 40 miles north until you come to US 8. That highway will take you across Wisconsin. Nothing jaw-dropping as far as scenery but it's a route that is often scenic: lots of forests and pretty lakes. At Iron Mountain, Michigan, US 8 joins US 2 and that's where it gets more scenic. At Escanaba, US 2 often skirts the north shore of Lake Michigan. At St. Ignace, you could check out Mackinac Island before crossing the strait on a pretty spectacular bridge. There you can head down I75 to Flint or you can follow US 23 that follows the western shore of Lake Huron. That also is a scenic road that at times almost seems like you're following an ocean road. (Minus the surf) We cross into Ontario at Port Huron. Nothing really scenic on the roads in Ontario but you make good time to Niagra Falls. We can make it to Niagra Falls in 2 days from Minnesota.
