trains - Munich to Passau

We will be taking a Danube river cruise this August but will spend a few days in Munich first. Would taking the train be our best option for traveling to Passau?

There are direct trains between Munich and Passau once every hour, the journey takes 2hrs 15 minutes.

No problem!

If you buy tickets in advance the normal 39 Euro fare can be reduced to 22, but read the small print. However reservation is not needed, so you can buy at the last moment but you will pay the higher fare.

Check www.bahn.de for times etc.

This is not correct. It is not for buying in advance, 22 € is the Bavaria ticket. The trains on the route are regional and there are no bookings or advance discounts. But you cannot travel before 9 on a weekday and you can only take regional trains (no IC, EC, ICE...). For this route though it does not really matter as there are only 1-2 IC trains on the way, rest is RE (RegionalExpress).

This is not clear on the English version of the site which simply says

Sparpreis Specific train booking, i.e. your ticket is valid only in the trains indicated on your ticket. This offer cannot be combined with a BahnCard 50 discount.

And this one is 19 Euros for a certain train on 25/04

But these are connection which include an ICE train on part of the trip. Discounted specials for long distance trains (ICE or IC/EC) are indeed only valid for the connection bought for. But it makes no sense to take on this trip a connection with a change of trains.

The shown savings fare for the direct RE (RegionalExpress) trains of EUR 22 is a Bayern Ticket and this is a day ticket. Which can be bought on spot for this price. At least from ticket machines. At the counter it is EUR 2 more.

.

But as OP wrote "we" I assume at least 2 persons. Than traveling on a Bayern Ticket makes even more sense as it is just EUR 26 for 2 persons traveling together.

Bayern Ticket covers furthermore also all local public transport in Munich (S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams, buses) and Passau (buses).
