No seat reservation tickets on DB regional trains

Hi... we have booked train tickets from Hamburg to Warnemunde on regional trains (after 9am Mecklenburg-Vorpommern-Ticket). These have no seat reservations. Do regional trains have seat reservations? If they do... are there sections for seat reservations and sections for no seat reservations (like in Japan)? If not, how do I know if the seat I am sitting has been reserved? By luck? Can someone help explain? Thank you very much.

On regional trains you sit wherever you wish to or are able to.

Mostly not.

There are a few regional trains where seat reservations are possible. On your route at max. the first train from Hamburg could be affected (RE 8/80 and RB 81).

On such trains there are clearly marked sections for travelers with seat reservations and sections for no seat reservations. Here a photo with a symbol for such a section (seated person + "R").

When neither you nor anyone else can make a reservation on these trains, you can just take any empty seat. Or stand, if by any chance the train is full.

On those DB trains that DO have reserved seats (e.g. ICE), you'll be able to tell in a number of ways depending on the design of the carriage concerned. In most cases, there is an electronic indication of which seats are reserved, between which stations, above the seat and/or (in separate 5-seater compartments) outside the compartment concerned.
